GTC Healing Garden

September 1, 2015

WiCC member Gateway Technical College partners with local health provider on a new project. Studies have shown that healing gardens contribute to the overall quality of health care for a patient as well as being an important part of the healing process. With this in mind, beginning the summer of 2015, Aurora Medical Center of Kenosha partnered with the Horticulture Program at Gateway Technical College to assist in designing healing gardens for the new Aurora Cancer Care site in Kenosha, WI.

Thirteen students in the Landscape Design Introduction course, led by Horticulture Instructor Courtney Greve, were challenged through a semester-long, comprehensive project to design a healing garden concept for the Kenosha site. Once the ground thaws in the spring, these two groups will partner yet again to provide students hands-on experience with installing and maintaining the healing garden.

For more information on this project, contact Courtney Grove, Horticulture Instructor at (262) 564-2492, and Madeline Carrera, Service-Learning Coordinator for Gateway at (262) 564-3138.
