marleyMarley Uran, UW-Parkside ’18, now feels “more powerful as a citizen” after attending the Campus Compact gathering of Newman Civic Fellows in Boston, MA in November 2016.  She learned early that time volunteering helps to shape character while becoming an advocate in serving others, and now she carries that commitment to community engagement into her time at UW-Parkside.  In 2016, she was named a Newman Civic Fellow, a national fellowship sponsored by Campus Compact and the Newman’s Own Foundation that recognizes and supports community-committed students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.  As a Newman Civic Fellow, Marley attended a convening of fellows at the Edward Kennedy Institute for the US Senate where she participated in a training about how to communicate across differences and a Senate Immersion Project.  She was one of 120 students from across the country who came together to form connections with other service-minded students and develop their leadership skills.  The experience helped Marley learn about the “variety of ways people can serve” and how “we connect to the bigger picture.”  This experience has built her capacity to communicate across cultures, while also connecting her to a network of other college students across the country who can support her as she tries to make UW-Parkside more connected to the surrounding community.

Marley encourages others to consider applying for a Newman Civic Fellowship and recommends that nominees “speak from your heart” about your experiences in service.  Nominations are currently being accepted. Learn more about Marley here.  Remember to NOMINATE a student from your campus to be a Newman Civic Fellow by March 13, 2017.
