From the Director’s Desk 07/2016

July 15, 2016

What a tumultuous month for the nation. We have witnessed several acts of senseless violence against members of the LGBTQ (see Campus Compact President Andrew Seligsohn’s statement), African-American, and law enforcement communities. In response, there have been many knee-jerk reactions based on fear or hate. However, there have also been many showcases of compassion, understanding, and peaceful reflection and prayer.

Clearly, we have many issues as a country that we must deal with related to racial, ethnic, religious, gender, and sexuality difference. There is no better place than a college campus to have open, honest dialogue that can move us to higher levels of understanding in solidarity with those who feel marginalized, whether people are from dominant or non-dominant groups.

It is my hope that WiCC member campuses continue to use their community engagement efforts as platforms to facilitate understanding across groups. I also would hope that we keep in mind that everyone’s perspective is valuable in the discussion.

If people cannot be honest and open about how they feel or perceive these actions, then we cannot heal. A lot of respect goes out to the campus presidents and chancellors who have started to offer formal ways for their students, staff, and faculty opportunities to process their feelings and discuss action steps. Please let me know how WiCC can support these efforts through formal trainings, in-services, or facilitated discussions.
