Fund for Positive Engagement Award Recipients
Campus Compact has announced 40 college and university recipients of grants to bring people together across lines of difference from its Fund for Positive Engagement, including WiCC members St. Norbert College, Western Technical College and UWEau Claire. Marley Uran, UW-Parkside ’18, now feels “more powerful as a citizen” after attending the Campus Compact gathering of Newman Civic Fellows in Boston, MA in November 2016. She learned early that time volunteering helps to shape character while becoming an advocate in serving others, and now she carries that commitment to community engagement into her time at UW-Parkside. The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, an independent nonprofit educational organization, proudly celebrates the recipients of the 2016 Higher Education Civic Engagement Awards. The award recognizes institutions that are achieving breadth and depth of civic engagement through sustained and mutually transformational partnerships that define and address issues of public concern at any level from the local to the global. A UW-Madison student is one of the college delegates from across the country to team up and submit questions for consideration for Monday’s first debate between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump. Education graduate student Jacquelyn Moss joined 150 delegates in California earlier this month to develop the questions as part of a non-profit program called College Debate ’16. SNC Advocating for the Homeless
St. Norbert College (SNC) faculty, staff, and students have had a long history in serving and advocating for the homeless in our area. Dr. Karina O’Malley, a retired Sociology faculty member, engaged her students in establishing the first shelter in Green Bay in 1986. Now there are over seven shelters, including three emergency shelters, and SNC contributes time, talent, and donations to many of these. More recently, SNC teamed up with the local Catholic Diocese to help support the area’s newest emergency shelter, St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter. Addressing Global Problems at a Local Level The mission of UW-Superior calls for the institution to “embody respect for diverse cultures and multiple voices, and engage the community and region.” This could be a challenge because Superior and Douglas County is relatively homogenous. Wisconsin Campus Compact is excited to announce a new partnership with The Facing Project, a nonprofit that connects people through stories to strengthen communities. The Facing Project was co-founded by Indiana Campus Compact Executive Director J.R. Jamison, along with New York Times bestselling author Kelsey Timmerman.The Facing Project works with campuses and communities to organize and share the stories of citizens through the talent of local writers and actors. In 2012, Tracey Snyder, a nurse practitioner developing a wellness program in Park Falls, Wisconsin, approached UW-Madison Horticulture graduate student Michael Geiger seeking guidance on a greenhouse project, Just an idea. The greenhouse needed both funding and expertise. So along with Horticulture professor Sara Patterson, the team applied for a Ira and Ineva Reilly Wisconsin Idea Endowment grant. The proposal was funded in summer 2013 and a team of local volunteers spent the fall of 2013 constructing the 25-by-50 foot vail-style greenhouse on vacant land donated by Flambeau River Papers. Mt. Mary Human-Centered Design
At Mount Mary University we require first-year students to take a course that orients them to college life through exploration of the mission and identity of the university. The course serves to embed creative pedagogical practices early into the university experience. Most students in the course are in their first semester at Mount Mary, and while many have volunteered in their younger years, few have experienced the synergy of intellectual study matched with community engagement that is the hallmark of service learning. WiCC member Gateway Technical College partners with local health provider on a new project. Studies have shown that healing gardens contribute to the overall quality of health care for a patient as well as being an important part of the healing process.
